5 Unusual Ways To Protect Your Home And Belongings
Anyone can become the victim of a mugging or burglary. Unfortunately, you will never see it coming and after the fact is when most people start thinking about what they should have done to avoid losing their treasured belongings.
To begin with, you adopted the well-known and advocated security measures including installing alarm systems or walking around with some pepper spray. However, there are also a few out of the box precautions that you can implement to avoid losing your property.
Here are five unusual ways to protect your home and belongings from burglary, or muggings.
1. Plant Shrubs But Trim Your Bushes
Wondering what a little gardening has to do with protecting your property from theft? Well, most homeowners do not realise that the trees and shrubs they have around their homes provide camouflage and places for burglars to hide. Alternatively, if you do not have shrubs around your property, you want to plant thorny ones to deter unwarranted breaches.
Giving those overgrown bushes a trim also gives your neighbours a direct view to your porch, doors, and windows as an added security measure. Also, burglars will naturally avoid your property if it doesn't offer the convenience of concealment when they are committing the break-in.
2. Hide Valuables In VHS Tapes
Now, you still want to protect your belongings by hiding them safely indoors if burglars break into your house. If you have an old VHS collection, for whatever reason, it could offer the best hiding place for your valuables.
Choose one of two and hide the valuables you want to conceal within them. The chances are that the burglars will not even give your VHS collection a look, because who uses them anymore? However, make sure that you have a sizeable collection of VHS tapes that are hard to look through to deter burglars from even giving it a thought.
3. Make It Appear Like You Are Always Home
Naturally, thieves break into houses at night and often in houses that look like there is no one home. You will want to make it seem like you are always home to keep burglars away.
Use indoor timers hooked to your lighting system, TVs, and Radios to switch them on at given intervals. It is particularly helpful to set the timers to turn on your lights when evening falls to make it seem like you are home. The timers can also put on the TV and radio during the day or night to create a similar impression.
4. Maintain High-Level Of Privacy
Your trash can tell a lot about you and properly discarding sensitive items can save you from burglary. So, you recently bought a flat screen TV, and you toss the box it came in beside your trash. It is an advertisement to anyone who cares that you have something new of interest.
Draw your blinds to prevent anyone peeping through your windows. Take your name off of your mailbox because thieves can get your telephone number using it. All they would need to do is call, and if there is no answer, it tells them that there is no one at home.
5. Get A Dog
Getting a guard dog is the good old tried and tested security measure that never fails. Get a German Shepherd, Rottweiler, or a pit-bull to tell any would-be intruder that your home is well-guarded. The barks of a dog are enough to keep any intruder away.
